River's first week with his new family

River has been doing wonderful in his new home. This is in a big part to his new family giving him lots of love and toys and more love. His new owners have been so generous in not only taking care of River they are sharing updates and pictures with me, so my heart is truly happy now and any selfish bit of sadness I might have had is gone. How could anyone be sad when he is in such a loving wonderful place? Again I reflect on how fast he bonded with his adoptive "parents" when they came to meet him. He was so goofy and showed off for them and snuggled with them immediately. Her are some pictures of his journey home and settling into his new house.

Riding home "watching" the cars go by. Since he can still see light and dark movements the cars going by were very interesting.

First night in his new home settling right down after finding the water bowl.

Stealing Misty's ball.

Sharing Misty's (the yellow lab) bed, I think River really enjoys his new sister and she might like his just a little bit.

New bone!

Awww contentment.

1-14-10 The Best and the Hardest Post to Write

Today I write the best news ever and the hardest post to write. River has found a family. They took him home today and if he fits in well it will be his forever home. River really liked them a lot and instantly seemed to bond well, snuggling, rolling on his back and trying to mouth there hands, something he does when he is really really happy ( I usually just shove a toy in his mouth as he isn't doing it hard just soft nibbles)
They are the perfect people that if I had ordered a family for River this would be it. He will have someone with him all day, he will have an older yellow lab female to be his buddy, or at least to tolerate his antics and keep him company, and after spending time with his new "parents" I know they will spoil him beyond his wildest dreams....in a good way. I keep tearing up when I realize I am not going to hear him clumping around the house, doing the full body wriggle for his supper and dashing around doing puppy zoomies...but I know it is for the best and he will get way more attention then I could give him....I will keep everyone posted on how he is doing.

I think the smile on both their faces says it all...

1-12-10 River Finds his Joy

I put together a little video of River being River. The first part is right after he got a bath...he got the puppy zoomies and ran around the living room. The next part he is playing with a 7 mos old lab puppy. Notice how gentle he is with her as she was literally half his size. Then I tried filming him playing with his bone but he noticed me and kept trying to follow me around. The last part is River waiting for his dinner. He gets very excited about dinner and will sometimes let out these huge woofs. This video shows better then I could ever describe how far River has come and how much joy this dog gets out of life despite his special needs. Please take the time to sit back, watch and enjoy the joy.

1-09-10 Top 10 Things to know about River

So as I was walking River last night for his nightly walk I thought it might be helpful to compile of list of "good to know" things about River. I have blogged about them in different posts but it is nice to have it in one spot.
1. River loves to be petted.
2. River likes to be close to his humans and dog friends. His favorite thing is to be curled up sleeping by your feet. If you are not around he likes to be around his doggy buddies.
3. River loves to eat. He is extremely food motivated. It makes training him to do new things easier. String cheese or hot dogs are easy cheap treats that he enjoys. He eats his dinner up with relish but is not a food guarder.
4. River hates crates. He panics when locked in one. I think it must have to do with his former life. I am trying to slooooowly train him that they are ok but feeding him in a crate but it would be great is River could just live the rest of his life crate free.
5. River has to be pottied often when he is awake and playing but you can leave him for several hours during the day accident free as he just sleeps.
6. River sleeps very soundly and you have to wake him up slowly so as not to startle him.
7. River almost knows the sit command and will sit every time for food. He will also go down for a food treat.
8. River needs to go down stairs on a leash or he will just fling himself down and fall. He can however go up stairs without a leash and someday may be able to go down by himself too, just not right now.
9. River needs to be on a leash at all times when he is outside and you have to be his eyes, stopping at curbs to let him know he has to go up and down, not letting him run into pokey bushes and poke himself in the eye. I let him do this once and felt like a horrible "guide person". He is very easy to walk on the leash and potties wonderfully on the leash. If it is dark and he starts to get nervous or unsure a big hug and some pets go a long way to comfort him. He is relatively easy to walk on the leash as well.
10. River loves toys. His favorite toy is a kong, especially with yummies stuffed in it but he will play with it empty as well. He likes to fling it around and find it. Sometimes River will even go outside and go potty with his kong in his mouth. He also likes stuffed toys. He likes them so much he thinks there legs/eyes/ears/etc need to be removed. He is good about not eating the stuffing though.
I am sure there are more things but I thought I would start with 10 for now.

1-6-10 Walking Dog

On Monday River got to go meet Dr. Kris Johnson at Fairhaven Vet for some further evaluation of his hips and the best plan for him. He was a total sweetheart to everyone and tolerated his exam including his sore ears being looked at like a star! The great news is he is allowed and in fact encouraged to go on walks. I had been taking it easy with him not knowing if it was ok or not and if hills were a problem. In fact the hills will help him build up rear muscle so they are a good thing. So today I took all three Rottweilers for a nice walk in the beautiful January sunshine. River enjoyed smelling all the smells and the warm sunshine on his coat. At one point he even tried rolling in the grass. As it was a bit muddy I encouraged him to move on and we kept going. On another good news note River has now slept 2 nights out of his crate accident free and very happily.

1-5-10 Ups and Downs

I am quickly learning with a foster dog that there are many ups and many downs. Luckily with River it is mostly ups. He is filling out to a nice 94 lbs so I am cutting back on his food so he doesn't gain any more weight. That means he is only eating 3 cups of quality grain free kibble and 1/2 can wet food a day and by next week he will be at 2 cups of dry and 1/2 can wet. People are constantly amazed that my 100lb dogs only eat 1.5 to 2 cups of food a day. It is all in what kind of food you feed. River has learned sit and down with food guidance and seems to like to learn new things. Potty training is getting better and better which is good as one of Rivers one areas that he has a hard time with is being confined. He has a really hard time with his crate. I tried just leaving him in it at night but he got himself way to upset, so now I am working on short stays in the crate, feeding him in there and giving him treats in his crate to teach him it is not a bad place. On a positive note we took him for another car ride last night and he did really good getting in the car.
We had some friends over to visit this weekend and he got to play with their 7 month old puppy. At first the puppy was frightened of River, which he didn't help by being so excited about the puppy he was leaping like a silly rabbit and letting out huge "woofs" (Did I mention River has a very LOUD bark when he does bark?). Eventually the pup got over her fear and then proceeded to play and wrestle with River. He is about twice her size but was soooo gentle, lying down on the ground and letting her chew on him happily. River really enjoys playing with other dogs. I should have video taped it but of course I forgot. Maybe they can visit again an we can get it on camera.

About a week ago I took River to meet Faith Bult . He did a great job and really liked visiting with her great dane puppy Boca.
